Establishes and monitors departmental goals in keeping with the facility’s mission, goals and objectives. Oversees the Health Information Management Department. Performs coding, abstracting and releasing of claims consistent with the current standards and best practices in the health information management field. Participates in designated committees and task forces to further the department’s goals and objectives. Participates as Department Leader in Hospital improvement activities.
Essential Job Duties:
Manages the HIM department by overseeing the daily activities of all Health Information Management staff members. Activities include coding, transcription, release of information, filing, scanning and attaching documents into patient electronic health record and reporting vital statistics. Codes, abstracts and releases claims consistent with Coding Clinic and other nationally and regional standards. Participates in the development and administration of the Health Information Management departmental budget. Works closely with the Senior Management team to coordinate activities of the Department associated with physician duties and responsibilities within health information management. Works with all designated members of the staff to facilitate the design of an effective Electronic Health Record. Insures that all scanned documents are consistently included in medical records. Supports the release of information consistent with facility, State, Federal and Privacy statutes and regulations. Ensures regular purge of medical information consistent with Washington and federal retention requirements. Establishes HIM Department Quality Improvement goals and reports monthly. Builds a strong culture of quality improvement and LEAN Management standards by facilitating regular department huddles with robust progress reporting, process improvement activities and staff recognition. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Registered Health Information Technologist or Certified Coding Specialist certification (CCS) required within two years of employment. Two years of coding experience in an acute care setting preferred. RHIT credential consistent with AHIMA requirements, within two years of employment. Computer and office machine skills, including encoder and abstracting abilities. Demonstrate excellent professional relations skills with effective oral and written communication skills. The incumbent must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description. Work requires proofreading and checking abstract for accuracy.
Days/Hours Mon – Fri; 8:00 am – 4:30. Hours may vary.
FTE: 1.00 FTE; 40 hours/week. Benefit eligible.
