The Washington State Department of Health (DOH), Medical Quality Assurance Commission ("Medical Commission") is seeking an innovative and collaborative professional who has demonstrated leadership and management skills to fill the position of Director of Investigations.  DOH is an employer of choice supporting employee engagement programs including Infant at Work, flex-work, telework and workplace modernization. 

The Medical Commission promotes patient safety for all Washington citizens and enhances the integrity of the physician (MD) and physician assistant (PA) professions through licensing, discipline, rulemaking and education.   The Medical Commission is authorized under RCW 18.71 and 18.71A and enforces the Uniform Disciplinary Act, RCW 18.130 

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Investigations is responsible for the final approval of all of the Commission's investigations, investigative policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines.  This position is responsible for leading a staff of fourteen (14) and the quality processing of more than 1,700 complaints and investigations per fiscal year.

The Medical Commission develops policies, procedures, interpretive statements, rules and regulations that impact the practice of medicine in the state. The Medical Commission is made up of 21 governor-appointed commissioners, 13 of whom are licensed physicians, two are physician assistants and 6 are public members. The Medical Commission's staff implements its strategic plan and carries out its statutory mission.  The Medical Commission collaborates with the Secretary of Health and the Governor to ensure medical practice delivered to Washington citizens keeps pace with emerging healthcare trends and policy changes.

Candidate Profile

DOH and the Medical Commission are most interested in candidates who have the DESIRED licensure, education, and experience in the following:

  • A Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) licensed in the State of Washington or eligible for licensure in the State of Washington; AND five (5) or more years of experience in the PA-C field; AND a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • A Medical Doctor (MD) licensed in the State of Washington or eligible for licensure in the State of Washington; AND five (5) or more years of experience in clinical practice.
  • A Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) licensed in the State of Washington or eligible for licensure in the State of Washington; AND five (5) for more years of experience in clinical practice.
  • An Advanced Practice Nurse (ARNP) licensed in the State of Washington or eligible for licensure in the State of Washington; AND five (5) or more years of experience in clinical practice; AND a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • A  Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Washington or eligible for licensure in the State of Washington; AND five (7) years' experience in clinical practice and a bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Criminal Justice (or equivalent); AND five (5) or more years of investigative experience in criminal Justice; AND two (2) or more years of experience leading or supervising the work of others.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience investigating health care providers.
  • Five (5) or more years of relevant management experience in the following areas:
    • Experience working within a state health profession regulatory framework, participating in the legislative process, and communicating national and state trends in health care.
    • Experience effectively leading and directing a group of managers and professionals.
    • Directing the development of necessary legislation, budgets, and application of resources.
    • Leading process and improvement activities, resulting in improved service, efficiency, or cost savings.

The annual range of compensation is between $73,140 and $98,376, depending upon qualifications.
