Do you like challenges? Hate being bored? Life moves fast on our med-Surg unit, and you must be prepared to keep up with a constantly changing environment. Med/Surg Nurses provide care for primarily adult patients before and after surgical procedures; they also attend to those who are being treated with pharmaceuticals to manage illness. Due to the broad range of medical conditions Med/Surg Nurses encounter, you'll quickly amass a broad knowledge base and will be able to easily transition into other specialties, if you so desire.

In addition to excellent nursing skills, med-surg nurses need top-notch organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

Minimum requirements (the following are minimal qualification necessary for entry into this classification)

Education: Graduation from accredited Nursing Program. Completes annual educational requirements.

License(s): Current State of Alaska Registered Nurse licensure (must meet education requirement(s) for Alaska State licensure).

Certification(s): Current BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate.

Experience(s): Successful applicant will show demonstrated success in critical thinking skills.

RN II: Independently plans and implements routine nursing care in predictable situations using standards. Begins to assume leadership responsibility. Needs minimal supervision. Advancement from RN I or a minimum of one (1) year continuous recent experience in a comparable patient care setting. Clinical competency in primary specialty and a minimum of one (1) float area required within one year of attaining CN II status.

RN III: Plans and implements nursing care, individualizing care as needed, without supervision. Able to manage routine and emergency care. Assumes basic leadership responsibilities. Advancement from RN II or a minimum of 3 years current acute care experience 2 of which are in primary unit specialty. Clinical competency in primary specialty and a minimum of one (1) float area required within one year of hire.

Physical: Meets dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean. Wears identification while on duty. Complies with state and federal laws for employee health requirements, such as TB testing and other requirements (see Employee Health Policy for specific requirements).
